Judge's Comment "had this moment not been filmed, it would have just been a rumour. This footage bears witness to a crucial moment in Intifada 2"

Television cameras are banned from the Temple Mount compound so, as violence erupted on Friday 29 September 2000, Hazem Bader, commissioned by APTN, had to smuggle his camera in past Israeli police posts. The violence came at a time of deadlock in the peace treaty talks as ownership of the Temple Mount / Haram as Sharif, the holy site revered by both Muslims and Jews, was bitterly contested. The Temple Mount compound is home to two major mosques. Part of the outer compound's structure is The Western Wall, remnant of the Jewish temple and a place for Jewish prayer. The previous day, Ariel Sharon's visit to demonstrate Israel's control, had inflamed the already tense situation.

As noon prayers came to an end, angry Palestinian youths began to stone Israeli police posted at the gates and on walls nearby. The police fired rounds of rubber bullets to disperse them and ordered Jewish worshippers away from the Western Wall. Dodging incoming bullets and outgoing stones, Hazem Bader filmed the clashes, only realising that a rubber bullet had hit his camera hand when he saw blood on dripping onto his leg. He stemmed the flow of blood and continued to film. Then, smuggling his camera out, he managed to get onto an Israeli ambulance which took him to the Hadassah Hospital.

Hazem's dramatic images marked the beginning of a wave of violence that was to rock Israel and the Palestinian Territories which still continues today, with a rising death toll of both Arabs and Jews.

Hazem Jamil Bader, a 35 year-old native of the West Bank town of Hebron gained early filming experience with local Palestinian television stations. Here, he learned camera skills from a more experienced cameraman who was working for ARD. He has been freelance since 1997, working for various television stations and organisations. Hazem is married to a teacher - Bassmah - with whom he has three children.
