The Rory Peck Awards 2001
sponsored by Sony

From the Chairman

Writing this in the days after the terrible attacks on New York and Washington I am conscious that, by the time you read this, events may have raced ahead. The media, and television in particular, brought the tragedy of the attacks in the US into all of our homes, and will be of continuing importance as this drama unfolds.

Many people associated with the Rory Peck Trust, including those in the freelance community, will be involved in reporting these events, and the risks they run in the course of their profession are a reminder, if one were needed, of the value of the work of the Trust.

This work is made possible by the support of many, but this year the Trust is in a more secure financial position than had seemed possible. Sony Broadcast & Professional Europe has agreed to sponsor our Awards for three years. This is in a sense a return, since Sony were our original sponsors. They are committed not only to supporting the Awards, our major fund-raising event of the year, but also to discuss other ways of developing their relationship with the Rory Peck Trust. Their generosity will give the Trust the opportunity to explore ways of expanding and making its work even more effective.

The Rory Peck Awards has always been a joint industry event. APTN are sponsoring this brochure, Channel 4 made the (lavish) facilities available for the judging. Reuters are filming the ceremony and BBC News have provided invaluable production and post-production support. They have also enabled us to benefit from the talents and expertise of our awards producer, Sarah Ward Lilley.

The panels of judges, convened during one of the busiest news weeks for several decades, showed, in the circumstances, remarkable dedication, and I am really grateful for their commitment and hard work. Thanks too to Kate Losowsky who, as administrator to the judges, helped keep the day on track.

Earlier this year, Tina Carr, our director, and I attended Newsworld Asia in Singapore, and thanks to Newsworld, and the hospitality of one of our Trustees, Pete Henderson, we were able to host a presentation which attracted considerable interest and raised our profile significantly in that region.

As I said earlier the Trust depends on support from many, its Trustees, the Committee and in particular those who have been associated with it from the beginning. I would like to take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of the Trust, our former chairman, Lucian Hudson, for his invaluable efforts in developing awareness for the Trust and its work.

I have two final thanks to say: first to Tina Carr and her assistant director, Melanie Brooks, for organising the Awards, but also for their energy in driving forward the activities of the Rory Peck Trust; and secondly to you, for coming and giving us your support.

Bob Jobbins
Chairman
