The Rory Peck Awards 2001

The Trust in 2001

There have been a lot of statistics recently, often connected with bad news. The Trust has had a busy year and in order to try and convey that to you, here are some numbers:

3 Years to develop and enjoy our partnership with Sony, exclusive sponsor of The Rory Peck Awards.

42 Entries were received for this years' awards, from 17 different nationalities, covering work in 47 countries.

12 Freelance cameramen have died in the last four years, as far as we are aware. There are,
almost certainly, more than that. We are investigating cases for potential beneficiaries covering freelance cameramen and women who have died or been severely injured over the past fifteen years in Algeria, Chechnya, Colombia, Congo, Malaysia, Salvador, Sri Lanka, Uganda. The list continues to grow, but we need your help. Tell us if you know of a freelancer's family in difficulty. If you can, tell us how to find them. Contacts are good. Facts are good. Even the tiniest bit of information could lead us somewhere.

62 Bursaries have been granted to freelancers for safety training since The Rory Peck
Training Fund began last year. 100s are still out there, needing to be trained. The
challenge now is to keep it going...

18.7% Fully insured freelancers. Does this sound silly? It shouldn't - because 90% of those freelancers who responded to the insurance survey that we began earlier this year, work or expect to work in war zones. Responses received so far show that 21.9% have only partial insurance and 59.4% have no insurance cover at all. 54.2% couldn't afford the premiums and only 8.3% were covered by the company commissioning their work.

The responses to the survey came from a broad spectrum of media freelancers - camerapeople, editors, producers, field producers, reporters, directors, journalists, lighting cameramen, photographers, sound engineers. 97% said they would be interested in our ideal goal - a dedicated insurance scheme for freelancers. This research will be ongoing.

2 people who have actively supported the Trust for the last few years in their different ways. First, departing Trustee Chris Daubney, to whom I am grateful for his early support and valuable advice. Then a special thank you to the Freedom Forum, for the impact on freelancers of their work on PTSD and safety, and in particular to John Owen for his staunch support of the Trust, both practical and ideological.

1 New Chairman. But that one is Bob Jobbins, whose experience, energy and vision is
bringing new life to the Trust.
