THE
RORY PECK AWARDS 2001
Sponsored by Sony Khaled
Zighari
Khaled's camera caught the action as Sharon, surrounded by a wall of security agents, toured the Temple Mount compound. He filmed the clashes as angry Muslim worshippers emerged to find a phalanx of Israeli riot police outside Al Aqsa Mosque. The following day, during even more violent clashes, Khaled was shot by the police with a rubber-coated steel bullet, which penetrated his thigh. His camera was lost in the confusion. Recuperation from the wound was slow and Khaled was unable to work for the entire first month of the Intifada - a severe blow for a freelance journalist. His pictures, however, continue to be used by broadcasters around the world. Khaled Zighari is 30 years old and trained both as a journalist and photographer. He has written for numerous Palestinian, Arab and international newspapers and periodicals. As a freelance cameraman and photographer, he has participated in over 150 photo exhibitions in the Arab World, Europe and the USA and worked on television features for CBS News, ABC, SAT 1, Reuters, AP and MTV. |
