Finalists: The Rory Peck Award for Features

The film follows two brothers, Reza and Hussein, who live among a feral population of drug addicts in Kabul’s Old City. Despite all obstacles, the brothers are committed to getting clean. Stephen and Jacques met the brothers via the United Nations Office of Crime and Drugs in Afghanistan.

The judges praised the “intimacy and enterprise” of their camerawork as well as its non-intrusion.

Cameraman's Comment

“During much of the shooting, the camera was only arm’s length from the subjects. To some extent, this helped modulate the almost overwhelming intimacy of regarding the pain and desperation they shared with us.”

Biographies

Stephen Dupont is a Sydney-based photojournalist specialising in long-term projects on conflict and global social issues. He has worked in war zones around the world for 17 years, filming reports for SBS Dateline, ABC Foreign Correspondent and the BBC.

Jacques Menasche began his career in journalism as a desk clerk at The New York Times and has since written on culture and conflict from the Middle East, Afghanistan, China and the US. He is based in New York City.
