THE RORY PECK AWARDS 2006 RAPHAEL NJOROGE - Kenyan Fuel SiphoningFinalist: The Sony Impact Award
Secretly-filmed images of corruption by Kenyan military personnel and other government officials in the capital Nairobi, who are clearly seen in a back street siphoning fuel from official vehicles and then selling it to members of the public. Raphael shot, edited and voiced this piece himself.
Cameraman's Comment “I filmed a fuel siphoning syndicate involving military personnel, who were selling the fuel to dealers. The risk was high. I was fearful because the chance that I would bring the culprits to account exposed me to danger.”BiographyRaphael Njoroge was born in 1968 in Kenya. He left school after completing primary education because his family could not afford to send him to secondary school. After leaving the military forces in 1997, he developed his hobby – photography - into a career and started working as a freelance photojournalist. He still works as a photographer and his ambition is to have a media centre for freelancers. Rafael likes to concentrate on human interest stories. |
