I’m writing this shortly after a day of judging of the Sony International Impact Award - a highly charged session that involved viewing and discussing a succession of news items and features that quite honestly left you stunned.

All the entries featured stories that had been overlooked, hidden or simply glossed over. Many of the cameramen and women who captured the footage put their lives at risk in doing so, and a great deal of our discussion on the day centred around the risks that reporters face in war zones and how vital they are in these situations. But it’s difficult for me to sit in a viewing booth and truly understand what these people face, so...

At the beginning of October I spent some time on one of the hostile environment training programmes that The Rory Peck Trust helps freelancers to attend. For me, it was an interesting, exciting experience but I’m all too aware that for the other participants it was something that could save their lives.

We’ve always said that the involvement of Sony goes beyond a donation for the Awards ceremony. My participation in activities this year is part of this - both for my own benefit to learn about the Trust, and as a way of involving more people within our company. For Sony staff, working with the charity is seen as a real benefit, and we have had numerous requests from people wishing to be involved.

This year, awareness of the Awards is higher than ever - the clips of all the finalists have raised a great deal of interest and there is a feeling that the Sony International Impact Award winners, combined, accurately reflect the criteria more than ever. This, I think, is a testimony to the broadcasters that took time out to meet in Milan and choose them - my thanks go to these people.

II must also say a final thank you to the Trust for ‘easing me in’ to my role as the new Sony representative. It’s been a steep learning curve, but one that I’ve enjoyed - it’s certainly kept me busy!
