| THE
RORY PECK AWARDS 2004 Sponsored by Sony Overseas Project - one year on Thanks to the Sigrid Rausing Trust, this year has been truly eye opening. I had no idea what a wealth of talent existed around the world not just amongst newsgatherers but amongst those that support them in the vast network of large and small NGOs that struggle on a number of different fronts to promote freedom of expression and save newsgatherers from harm. This year we would not have been able to do our work without the Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Sans Frontieres, the International Freedom of Expression Exchange, the International Federation of Journalists, and many other regional groups like the Freedom Fund for Filipine Journalists, the South East Asian Press Association, Fundación Para la Libertad de Prensa, Instituto Prensa y Sociedad, Arab Press Freedom Watch, Journaliste en Danger and many others. Then there are individuals from broadcasters, news agencies and other organisations, that give their time for free to the Trust, even when they know us only by our website or through email. With new opportunities arise new questions. Does the term freelance apply in Asia, Africa and Latin America? How do we cater to local newsgatherers, also courageous and dedicated to the task of bringing news to the world, if they happen to be employed on an even more casual basis than the Western freelancer? In some cases they are not paid at all, or are paid sums that necessitate them working for many different outlets or even keeping a business going on the side. We have gained an insight into the lives of newsgatherers in some of the toughest working environments from Iraqi Kurdistan to Colombia. The Trust has both succeeded in being true to itself and yet flexible in its empathy with newsgatherers in the developing world, areas where its work is profoundly appreciated. Melanie Anstey
