The Mexico Advisory Committee

As part of the The Good Practice Programme, the Trust has appointed a local Advisory Committee consisting of four journalists who are familiar with the activities and experiences of Mexican freelancers in broadcast and print as well as the work of The Rory Peck Trust. This committee has no legal or statutory role but will help by advising and monitoring the progress of Phase 1 and of any subsequent phases.

The members of the Mexico Advisory Committee are:

Susana Seijas (chair)

Susana Seijas is a freelance journalist based in Mexico City. She is presently a Knight International Journalism Fellow at Televisa, producing investigative news pieces with the special projects team. Previously, she hosted a half-hour nightly news programme for Mexico City´s Imagen Radio and was a producer for BBC News. Her freelance work includes assignments with 60 Minutes II, Fox News Radio, Voice of America, Latin America Press, Herald News ( New Jersey) and Gatopardo Magazine ( Bogotá, Colombia) among others. Before becoming a journalist, Susana worked at the Freedom Forum in London. Susana is a graduate of Leeds University (Russian Studies) and of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York.

 

Pedro Enrique Armendares
Pedro Enrique Armendares is Executive Director of the Centro de Periodistas de Investigación, A.C. (CPI), an independent organisation affiliated with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE). He frequently takes part as an instructor and panelist in journalism workshops and seminars both in Mexico and at universities in the US. He has worked as a full-time researcher and professor in the International Studies Division of the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE, México City), and as Academic Coordinator at the Mexico City Study Center of the University of California. Before joining CPI he worked as an investigative reporter for national and international print and broadcast media, including La Jornada and BBC Mundo. Pedro Enrique holds a BA in History from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México ( Mexico City) and an MA in International Journalism from the University of Southern California (Los Angeles).

 

José Cohen

José is a freelance producer based in Mexico City and the main freelance correspondent for ABC in Mexico. He started working in newsgathering as a freelance sound recordist and cameraman for NBC News in Russia in the early 1990s and has covered wars and civil unrest around the world, especially in Latin America. He has over thirteen years experience in television and has worked for international broadcasting organisations, such as, ABC News, NBC News, RAI Italy, APTN, Reuters TV, and Swiss TV. In 1996, he established his own video media production company Cactus Film which now specialises in aerial and underwater photography. He holds a bachelors degree in visual arts from the Cambridge School of Weston in the U.S.

 

María Idalia Gómez

María Idalia is a freelance journalist based in Mexico City. She is presently working in the Quick Response Unit for the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) in Mexico City. She is a freelance journalist for several magazines and newspapers in Mexico and Central America as well as W-Radio’s programme Hoy por Hoy with Carmen Aristegui. She is the co-author of the book “ With Death in Their Pockets: Six Outrageous Stories of Drug Trafficking” which was awarded the prize ‘Planeta’ for journalism in 2005. She has over 14 years experience in newspapers and electronic media and has also been awarded the Mexican National Prize of Journalism in 2006 in the investigative reporting category.
