Special Commendations:
Andi
Djatmiko
Andi Djatmiko's pictures, shot as violexnce flared in the Indonesian province of Ambon, provided indisputable evidence that Indonesian troops were providing aid and covering fire to Muslim fighters in Ambon city. As a Christian trying to cover events from the Muslim side of the lines, Andi took an extraordinary risk - one that has left him and his family vulnerable even now - but chose to do so because he felt that both sides of the conflict needed to be told. Andi is married with 4 children. In 1993 he joined PT Axis International, a production house where he produced more than 200 commercials until the outbreak of conflict ended his career in 1997. While working as a taxi driver, Andi picked up an APTN cameraman and began working as a fixer. He has been a freelance cameraman ever since.
Fredi
Selano
Fredi Selano, covering the ethnic violence in Indonesia's Ambon province during June this year, shot events that went far beyond the normal scenes of urban violence. Later in the month, Fredi travelled to a burning village on the outskirts of the city - showing that not all civilian refugees were fighters - many had never carried a gun or machete. Fredi first picked up a camera little more than a year ago. He has a university degree in economics, but was forced to give up his job when the sectarian violence started. He has sustained several injuries while filming, having been grazed by bullets and wounded more than once by arrows. |
