The Rory Peck Awards 2000

From the Chairman

As I step down as chairman, I am delighted by how far the Rory Peck Trust has come since Sir John Gunston and Juliet Peck first conceived it. What the Trust was set up to do has never been more relevant. This memorable, tragic year could prove decisive in driving home the overwhelming importance of safety, insurance and training, and finally persuading all broadcasters and news agencies to align their deeds with their intentions. The Trust has helped to prepare the ground, improve the climate and broker a robust coalition of interests: the challenge now is to close the deal with the industry's key players and help deliver common industry standards.

TVnewsweb's sponsorship of the Rory Peck Awards is most fitting: it is a company with whom we are very proud to be associated. The judges and the production team led by Sarah Ward-Lilley deserve our special thanks. BBC World, Channel 4 and Reuters have been pivotal in giving us greater exposure. We have the support of leading figures in news and current affairs for whom the Trust is a very special cause. We have one of the most passionate and effective committees in the industry, backed up by the freelancers' courage in speaking out about what matters, a great patron in Lord Cranborne, and the commitment and human touch of the Director Tina Carr and the Assistant Director Catriona Combe. It will remain my favourite charity.
