The Trust in 2000

Every year in this brochure, we publish a list of those who have helped us. Naming people is one of the few ways we have of saying thank you for all the support we receive. As a charity you get used to holding out the begging bowl. We are grateful for all the help and support - but we are not on our knees. In 1998, the Rory Peck Award was given to Miguel Gil Moreno. Two years on - and Miguel is dead, killed while doing his job. Wars are no respecter of profession: journalists and camerapeople have become, it seems, fair game. More than ever we need to showcase freelance achievement in news and current affairs, to honour the courage and dedication with which freelance camerapeople like Miguel Gil pursue the truth. And more than ever, we need to ensure that they are given the respect and fair treatment that is their due. Five years after the formation of The Rory Peck Trust, leading news organisations are now embracing its key aims and serious work has begun on establishing a Code of Practice.

The Rory Peck Training Fund, launched this year, has really taken off and the demand grows. We now need continued and greater financial support to secure bursaries for the future. Insurers and RPT Committee members are working on insurance for freelancers. In September, helped by the Trust’s grant, the widow of freelance cameraman Ramzan Mezhidov bought a flat and housed her family.

Finally, we have been so fortunate to have worked closely with Lucian Hudson for the last three years. We will greatly miss his commitment, generous support and constant encouragement.
