From Sony
Miles Flint with Najibullah Quaraishi, Sony Impact Award winner 2002 Weve come to the end of our three-year sponsorship of the Rory Peck Awards - and my goodness, what an event its been! Through the judging process and ongoing involvement with the charity, we have come into contact with people who are risking life and limb to inform us of world events. As a result my colleagues at Sony and I have never felt so close to the news stories that we see broadcast around the world. Weve been imbued with a greater understanding of exactly what it means to capture that bit of footage - which goes on to shock or anger people on a global scale - and Im glad that weve been able to be part of a process that thanks the freelance community for its input.
Miles Flint with Talal Aburahma, Sony Impact Award winner 2001 In 2001 we gave the first Impact Award to Talal Aburahma for one short piece of film that is as clear in my mind today as it was two years ago - The Death of Mohammed El Durah, a boy caught up in the Palestine/Israel conflict. Najibullah Quaraishi took the Impact Award in 2002, with footage of an Afghanistan conflict that showed the world exactly who was involved in liberating the country. Doubtless you will have seen the entries for this year - quite possibly the most powerful set we have seen to date. Watching one, I felt real fear for the cameraman. Another brought home the sorrow and horror being felt by a whole nation, and the third told a tale of tragic valour. I dont envy the cameramen, and I dont envy the judges. Ive always said that we value our relationship with the Trust - it is educational, challenging and a way for us to put something back into the broadcast community. So we wont let it end here - Im happy to confirm that Sony will continue its sponsorship of the Awards into 2004, and will fund the 2004 Awards. See you then. Miles Flint The
Sony International Impact Award Winner.
