2003 Glenn Middleton News Portfolio Finalist: The Rory Peck Award for Hard News
Middletons portfolio contains moving, and often disturbing images which remind us of recent - and ongoing - issues and events around the world. At the IDP camp (Internally Displaced People) where an average of five people were dying every day, Middleton records the tragedy of the famine in Angola. A poor community near Kimberley are sad proof of the lack of healthy living conditions for the black population in South Africa. Filming undercover in Botswana, one of the richest countries in Southern Africa, Middleton documents the awful situation of a country where Aids amongst the adult population has risen to a staggering 65%.
Cameramans Comment As we touched down in a remote area east of Luanda I suddenly felt weak. This was Angola and it doesnt get much worse, even before we got to our destination I could picture the images I would have to witness. I started filming in a tent where many children lay helpless, waiting, dying I filmed two boys sitting on their mothers lap. Hard as it was, I moved closer only to frighten them into screams of disapproval. Perhaps they thought I would hurt them. Fighting with my emotions I kept filming, these were the images I would use to shock the world. There were no need for words, all I could hear was the cry for help the cry Ill never forget.
Biography Glenn Middleton is a freelance cameraman/editor working in Southern Africa. He has covered newsgathering stories around the world, ranging from the post-apartheid years in South Africa to the ongoing wars that continue to destabilize the African continent.
