The Overseas Project

Funded by The Sigrid Rausing Trust

I’m delighted that the Sigrid Rausing donation this year has given me a chance to get involved with the work of The Rory Peck Trust. The kind of people that the Trust helps are those kinds of people that I’ve worked closely alongside in some of the world’s most troubled areas.

Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking that freelancers are unnecessary risk-takers, desperate for attention and recognition. In my experience freelancers are in fact those who consider it vital to tell an untold story, even if it does bring risk to them personally. They are motivated because what they are reporting impacts on their own lives and the lives of their families. They also bring cultural sensitivity, knowledge and street-wisdom to the reporting of their countries. They contribute to the breadth of coverage because it’s not always possible for major broadcasters to have staffers in the right place at the right time. In short, their contribution to our understanding of world events is essential.

The Sigrid Rausing Trust donation is specially targeted at enabling The Rory Peck Trust to reach out to freelancers in the developing world. I hope that this year we will be able to bring real financial assistance, as well as moral support, to those freelance media workers, who operate in the most difficult conditions in some of the poorest and most war-torn communities of our globe.
