Keeping True

The quote on the cover of this brochure is taken from an interview with Rory Peck filmed by Azerbaijan News Service.

Seeing it for the first time this year I was affected, as much by the evident charisma of Rory Peck as by the sentiments he uttered, which ring as true and relevant today as they did when he spoke them in the dacha at Peredelkino in Russia, where he lived with his wife Juliet, and children.

It has been a year of great sadness for the families of many freelancers. We are helping some of these families. Others are being helped by broadcasters - a welcome development. Some need another kind of support. It is with heartfelt appreciation of their courage and generosity that I thank those who, when asked “How can we help you?” responded with “Thank you. But how can we help you?”

Christina and Robin Scott maintain Roddy’s link to the Trust, working tirelessly - and very successfully - at fundraising both for the fund for dependents and for the training fund. We thank their family and friends for their outstanding support, in particular Toby Astridge who, with his friends and the support of American Express, raised money through a charity bike ride. When the family of Jeremy Little learnt about the Trust from NBC’s Chris Hampson, their response was immediate. Together with Chris, their efforts have raised a very significant sum in Jeremy’s memory.

The dacha in Peredelkino could be said to have been the true birthplace of the Rory Peck Trust, and of these Awards. In applauding courage and adventure, in supporting the independent view, above all in recognising the value of ‘free’ - I hope we have kept faith.
