THE RORY PECK AWARDS 2005 ALI FADHIL Fallujah: The First Eye Witness Finalist: The Sony Impact Award
Ali Fadhil's film reveals utter destruction inside Fallujah - unburied bodies eaten by wild dogs, thousands of homes reduced to rubble and an embittered people. He captures the psychological humiliation of Fallujan men, grief at burials, and refugee camps housing thousands. These images gave the lie to the belief that Fallujah was "getting back to normal".
Cameraman's Comment “I am still unpacking my thoughts of what happened in Fallujah. It was a heavy blow to witness the ruins and half-standing buildings of what was once a modern city in the middle of the desert, one of the few in Iraq…the real shock for me was that everything I saw was planned in the name of a promised democracy. For me, there was no question other than: Is it worth it?" BiographyTrained as a medical doctor in Iraq, Ali Fadhil began working as a ‘fixer-translator’ for the Guardian, the New Yorker Magazine and American National Public Radio in 2004. The Scott Trust paid for him to travel to the UK to train in documentary filming and to complete a hostile environment course. He recently won a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the USA, but has now returned to Iraq. |
