INIGO GILMORE and HASYIM

The Man Who Dared the Tsunami

Finalists: The Sony Impact Award

“It showed real sincerity and originality.”

Judge's Comment

Two weeks after the Tsunami, Inigo Gilmore travelled alone to Banda Aceh. He tracked down Indonesian cameraman Hasyim who shot the iconic images of the Tsunami. The film shows Hasyim’s footage being broadcast, the first interview he gave to anyone outside Indonesia and recreates the scene as he saw it when he captured those images.

Cameraman's Comment

"The least I could do was to give him a video camera before I left so he could do what he loved …I hoped through this film to highlight not only his plight but also his dream - so that in the end someone might come forward to help him realise that dream."

Biographies

Inigo Gilmore has worked as a freelance DV cameraman / director / reporter, shooting for TV and documentaries for the past 6 years in Africa and the Middle East. His film ‘Good Morning Baghdad’ was a finalist for the Rory Peck Award for Features in 2004.

While trying to find work as a TV cameraman, Hasyim has earned a living by filming weddings. He is using the camera that Inigo gave him to document the rebuilding operation, as the people of Banda Aceh try to piece together their shattered lives.
