TOMASZ GLOWACKI

Chechny: The Dirty War

Finalist: The Rory Peck Award for Features

“Freelancers often bring light to places we don’t normally see – Chechnya is definitely one of those places. This film has both strength and passion – they gave months and months of their lives to it, living in incredibly difficult and dangerous conditions.”

Judge's Comment

The crew have focused on Chechnya for ten years. Their contacts and the length of time they have worked there has resulted in a trust from the Chechen resistance that is almost unrivalled. This footage, which contains interviews with some of the most wanted resistance fighters in Chechnya, was shot under extreme conditions.

Cameraman's Comment

If you travel through Chechnya it's always a gamble and when you contact fighters in the mountains you have to be prepared for anything. You can be kidnapped, arrested or even killed. You may end up with the wrong group. ….patience and being prepared are the basics."
