Needs of a Changing Industry: Forum

Twenty years of reporting…Falklands, the Gulf and Afghanistan…from a nightly institution to a 24-hour global entity…quality versus quantity - news as we knew it has disappeared.

At a recent discussion forum co-hosted by Sony and the Rory Peck Trust, in Basingstoke, UK, a group of journalists, representatives from the BBC and the freelance world looked at the Photograph: Sony Broadcast & Professional Europefuture of news.

The sessions were chaired by Ian Collis, Director of Broadcast Business, Sony, and they discussed the pressure of emerging technologies and how technological advances within the industry are addressing these needs.

To highlight some of their conclusions:

  • Audience fragmentation will put journalists under increasing pressure to repackage stories

  • The need for more content in a variety of formats will be met by journalists at 'base' rather than specialist reporters

  • Television needs to re-examine how it handles news

  • TV news will become a 'home page', that will give basic news for the viewer, and lead them online to inform themselves

Sony hope to build on this event, working with their partners and other interest groups possibly on a pan-European level.
