Recent Beneficiaries In February 2000, Colombian widow Bernarda Vesga Rodriguez lost both her sons in an ambush. One was a freelance cameraman, the other a journalist. Their contributions had been her only source of income. She received no compensation of any kind and lives in abject poverty. The Trust's crisis relief grant will pay her rent and help her subsist. Pablo Enrique Medina Motta was working on a freelance contract when he was killed in December 1999 whilst filming a guerilla attack on the Colombian town of Gigante. He was 19 years old and, together with his father, shared the financial responsibility for the rest of the family. The family received no compensation. The Trust has made a grant towards the higher education costs for Pablo's younger brother and sister. 33 year old freelance
cameraman Luis Alberto Rincon Solano was on a self-funded assignment,
filming the municipal elections, when he was killed in November 1999 near
the city of El Playon in Colombia. There was no compensation or death
grant. Luis had been the main breadwinner for the family. Although his
father has recently succeeded in picking up some work as a driver, the
rest of the family remain unemployed and have to deal with serious health
problems. The Trust's subsistence grant will ease the pressure. The Trust would like to thank The British Council in Bogota for their assistance with these cases.
