Training, training, training... if you're going to have a mantra, it might as well be meaningful - and this is ours. The demand for bursaries from The Rory Peck Training Fund is growing as freelancers worldwide realise they can take positive steps to ensure their own safety and that of their colleagues. We are delighted that Channel 4 Television has become the latest contributor to the Fund. Media budgets are stretched to the limit these days and we congratulate those broadcasters and editors who see safety as a priority and, with awareness of the industry's shared responsibility, have contributed to the Fund. Our search for support is ongoing. The single biggest contribution anyone can make is to give media workers the skills they need to do their work properly in an increasingly dangerous world.

We are pleased to announce that the Board of the Rory Peck Trust has been strengthened by the addition of three new Trustees. We welcome: Michael Jermey, Director of Development, ITN; Raj Parker, Partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Andy Tilley, Head of Business Development, Sky News. Their commitment, skills and expertise have already begun to make the Trust even more effective.
In May this year, the Trust was invited to join a new panel set up by Dr. Dennis McShane, the Foreign Office Minister responsible for Human Rights. The Free Expression Panel will contribute to government strategy for promoting freedom of expression worldwide, and the first meeting took place recently, attended by NGO's, other Trusts, academics, lawyers and campaigners. The discussion threw up many issues and ideas for action, including drafting lists of imprisoned /intimidated/exiled journalists, as case studies for government lobbying; erasing obsolete UK laws that can be used as justification for restrictive practices overseas; and ways of drawing the line between legitimate comment and hate speech.

Finally, a reminder that The Rory Peck Awards is the main fundraising event for the Trust and we really do count on your support, so - send us your entries, buy lots of tickets - don't miss the most moving event of the autumn.

What was I saying? Oh yes. Training. Training. Training Training Training …
