"I do what I do because you
need to know"

The shortest speech of the night was ten words long, lasted 3.2 seconds and said it all. They were spoken by freelance cameraman /producer Peter Jouvenal as he accepted the first Rory Peck Special Award for outstanding freelance achievement. A highly respected freelancer who has worked in Afghanistan over the last twenty years, Peter, like his fellow Trustees Colin Peck and Vaughan Smith, is unable to compete in the Awards. This year, the Awards acknowledged their huge contribution to newsgathering.

In its eighth year, the Rory Peck Awards, sponsored by Sony, seem to have come of age. On October 30th at The National Film Theatre in London, the packed auditorium or, as host Jon Snow called it "a creamy gathering" experienced an evening rare in its emotional impact. In all Awards ceremonies, there are finalists and winners, but somehow the outstanding courage of all this year's finalists made it feel like an evening of winners.

Miles Flint, President of Sony Business Europe, paid tribute to them all. "The judges saw some truly moving footage, which brought back many memories for us all. It was a difficult task - but their decisions confirm the important role that freelance cameramen and women play -that of going beyond the 'face value' of a story and revealing the real truths of what is occurring. They are very brave people."
