CALL FOR THE SONY IMPACT AWARD

It seems hardly any time since we were asking this - but once again we are asking for submissions to the Sony International Impact Award.

Last year saw a wide range of entries covering the majority of world events, large and small. As I wrote this call for participation, I reflected briefly on what had happened in the last 12 months that may be highlighted in the finalists for 2003. The Bali bombing, the further disturbances in the disputed Palestinian territories, the loss of the Challenger shuttle, the sniper hunt in Washington - a great deal has taken place.

Now, watching the Iraq conflict unfold, it is highly likely that we will have submissions from those currently filming the hostilities. Already I have seen compelling images that match the award's criteria - and I expect to see many more in the coming weeks. A sobering thought - but one that shouldn't detract from the main aim of the Sony Award - to honor the work of freelance cameramen and women who highlight issues of world importance, and particularly those with a strong humanitarian aspect.

As with last year, the Award will be judged by a pan-European panel of judges drawn from the broadcast industry and we will continue to work with the Trust to develop this group as a way of expanding awareness of the charity's work across Europe. The group will meet and view the nominated footage on the 9th September 2003 in the German offices of Sony. We hope to announce the shortlisted finalists at the end of that month.

So, if you feel that you have filmed something that fits the criteria, or you know someone who has, please do contact the Trust. It is only through your active participation that we are able to honor the work of the freelance community.

Thank you.
