AND THE ISSUE IS ... RAISING FUNDS

In that first terrible moment of the phone call, a family's life is changed forever. Like others, we have been left reeling this year by the deaths of so many media workers, eleven of whom were freelancers - some very experienced, others full of promise.
The Rory Peck Trust is the only organisation in the world that is dedicated to the needs of those left behind when a freelancer is killed. We try to help as much as we can - but our resources are limited and we have to be cautious in our giving.

I make no apologies for devoting this issue of the free lens to raising funds for the work of The Rory Peck Trust.

Tina Carr, Director, The Rory Peck Trust

Ten years ago this year, Rory Peck was killed while filming in Moscow. As a result the Trust was established in his name to help the dependents of those who are killed or seriously injured in the course of their work. Over this decade the work of freelances has become increasingly dangerous and the potential demands on the Trust have year on year outstripped our resources.

We have been fortunate in having the support of the broadcasting industry and in the continuing and generous support of Sony Business Europe, sponsors of the Rory Peck Awards. Now, thanks to the hard work of a small group of Trustees, we are delighted to announce that the Trust has received a substantial grant from The Sigrid Rausing Trust. This will enable us to give more help to the families of freelances and to explore systematically ways of expanding our activities overseas. This grant represents an opportunity for The Rory Peck Trust to become significantly more effective in carrying out its charitable purposes - it also forces us to redouble our efforts to raise funds to make our work possible.

The Rory Peck Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday October 30th at the National Film Theatre in London. Please continue to demonstrate your support by buying tickets for yourselves and friends. Help us to make sure that this year's ceremony is another major success for the Trust, both as way of raising awareness of the work of the freelance community, and as a way of raising money to further our work.
