The Rory Peck Awards 2003
Sponsored by Sony

Winners and finalists, from left: Fred Scott, Phil Goodwin, Glenn Middleton, Dodge Billingsley, Matthew Carney, Rodrigo Vazquez, James Brabazon, Ibrahim El Batout

In this year, the tenth anniversary of the death of Rory Peck, it felt appropriate that The Rory Peck Awards should be part celebratory and part tribute. The event was, for the first time, a sell-out. As this is our main fundraiser, it was very heartening for all those who contribute to the Trust or who have been involved with the Trust since it began - a real vote of confidence. This year, however, the Awards also provided space for the newsgathering industry to stop and reflect on the personal and professional significance of having lost so many freelancers in such a short time.

The families and friends of Kaveh Golestan, James Miller, Roddy Scott and Richard Wild came to the Awards. Paul Moran's widow and daughter came over from Paris. The brother and friend of José Couso came from Spain, while Jeremy Little's parents and brother travelled from Australia. The attendance of all these families at the Awards was a measure of their very great courage.

Members of Rory Peck’s family watched as Tira Shubart, a founding member of the Trust, paid tribute to Rory, telling stories that gave an idea of the kind of man he was and showing some of the work that earned him such a great reputation.

Winners 2003: Rodrigo Vazquez (Features), Fred Scott (Hard News), James Brabazon (Sony International Impact Award) with Miles Flint, President, Sony Business Europe

It's worth remembering that Juliet Peck, Rory's widow, first approached Sony for support in 1995. If they had not responded, the Awards - and the Trust - would never have happened. We appreciate all that Sony have done over the last three years to enable us to develop this unique event and it is really gratifying to read the following from Miles Flint, President of Sony Business Europe: "I've always said that we value our relationship with the Trust - it is educational, challenging and a way for us to put something back into the broadcast community. So we won't let it end here - I'm happy to confirm that Sony will continue its sponsorship of the Awards into 2004 and will fund the 2004 Awards."

Sony - you are doing the right thing - and the Trust is grateful.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Michael Butler and Inmarsat, sponsors of 'the free lens', for their support this year.
