Letter from Paddington

Thanks to all of you who have e-mailed / snail-mailed / voice-mailed and loud-hailed us. We've had a very positive response to the first two issues of the free lens. We are now shifting the emphasis and want to make room for more of your features, stories and articles.

The RPT/BAFTA Open Forum "Whose News is it Anyway?" took place in March. As a result of issues raised, the Chairman Lucian Hudson initiated a sub-group to look at freelance rights on the internet. (see Internet Rights are not for Free). Apparently at BAFTA they judge the success of an event by how many people remain in the bar and for how long. We had a hugely successful event then!

We are now gearing up for the 1999 Rory Peck Awards - the entries are coming in from all over the world and, here in the shoebox, it's beginning to get exciting. If you haven't yet entered, now's your final chance - we have extended the deadline to Wednesday 8th September. Remember that the Awards are the ONLY showcase in the world for freelance work - we look forward to seeing many of you at the Barbican on October 18th.

I've only got one more thing to say...

Why, why, oh WHY aren't all you UK-based broadcast freelancers falling over each other to go on Hostile Environment training courses? With the brilliant Skillset subsidy, THEY COST PRACTICALLY NOTHING. These current subsidies last until Christmas, AKE and Centurion are running courses all the time - so ring
us NOW!
