Letter from Paddington

So much has happened and continues to happen for the Trust. Recognition of the Rory Peck Awards continues to grow. This year we had more media coverage than ever before. Reuters Television filmed the ceremony and put it out on the VNR, with further broadcasts by BBC World, MTV3, NHK. Channel 4 Television gave the Trust its terrestrial debut, and it was terrific to find "The Rory Peck Awards Slot" on all the TV listings.

Thanks to our sponsors, Newsforce, and to Sarah Ward-Lilley and her great production team, the Award ceremony went off without a hitch. Well... almost. You simply can't legislate for Jon Snow. Presenting Sorious Samura with his prize for Hard News, he handed him the overall Rory Peck winner prize, a voyager clock, instead. When Sorious was called back to actually receive his second prize, it wasn't there. With a subtle sleight of hand, he handed the clock back to Jon muttering "Think you might need this". The presentation went ahead and nobody was any the wiser. Until now.

Next year looks exciting: a high-profile fundraising dinner from top financial PR company Brunswick; a workshop for freelancers on negotiating deals; AND... our major new initiative: The Rory Peck Training Fund, providing accessible subsidies for freelancers undertaking Hostile Environment training. I am delighted to announce that the Freedom Forum have given this scheme their vote of confidence and are making the first contribution, to be known as The Freedom Forum Bursaries.

And without mentioning the M-word, I would like to wish you all a safe and healthy New Year. Peaceful is, sadly, too much to hope for.
