ONE WEEK IN MAY…
Miguel Gil, Abed Takoush, Kurt Schork

Only if you had been on Mars could you have missed the massive shock wave that ran through the world's media when, in one dreadful week, a fixer, a cameraman, and a journalist were all killed in pursuit of the news.

Miguel Gil (right) was very special to The Rory Peck Trust. In 1998 he won The Rory Peck Award for his extraordinary, close-shot Kosovo footage, some of it seemingly shot belly-up between whistling bullets. His photo launched our first newsletter. His running image launched the Rory Peck Training Fund. We heard about him all the time from people who worked with him in Kosovo, Chechnya and Sierra Leone.

The shock of these deaths brings home to us once again the reality of what the Trust does, and the reason we are here.

The world of the freelance is a small one. Each death - and even one is too many - shakes this world to the core.

The Rory Peck Trust extends its sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Miguel Gil, Abed Takoush and Kurt Schork.
