Freelance Realities
By Ben Anderson, freelance cameraman

If Ron Davies’ recent 10 minute visit to Somerleyton Road in Brixton was a gross error of judgement, I don’t know what you’d call my ending up living there for two years. That’s where I was when I got the call to go undercover for Channel 4. Just eighteen months later, I was getting a Special Commendation at the Rory Peck Award for spending 8 months secretly filming the funeral business. It was my first job in television. I had found something that I wanted to do.

Before, I had been underpaid, underwritten and regularly had ideas and information stolen. I had accepted this as a newcomer at the bottom of the ladder, thinking it wouldn’t last long. At the Award, there was a great deal of talk about the support the industry has for those who chose to put their necks on the line for the sake of a story. For a few hours at least, the world in which I had recently chosen to make my living seemed to be at my fingertips. I was patted on the back for what I had done, and I will remember the night for years to come. I got the last tube home and was soon back at a desk in an office full of people who knew nothing of what I had done. I thought it was only a matter of time before I would be off around the world like a little Hemingway.

First freelance reality
I’ve got ideas. I want to work and I want to learn. I’m ready, willing and able. But so far, there’s been nothing to encourage future projects. Without encouragement and the chance to learn, I could end up making docu-soaps about ill cats or supermarkets. I’d like to say I’m certain that won’t happen to me. I haven’t been shot at for years, but I’m only 23 and I’m doing what I can.
