Now more than ever, journalists are recognising the necessity and value of hostile environment training, whether reporting from Syria, Libya's frontline, post-Tsunami Japan or riots in the UK.  For freelancers operating without the daily backup and resources available to staff journalists, this training is even more essential.

The Rory Peck Trust provides bursaries so that that freelance newsgatherers, who could otherwise not afford to, can undertake safety and first aid training for work in hostile environments. 

Our bursaries help freelancers to assess risk and spot danger, handle a crisis, support others and give first aid training. The right training can save not only their lives, but the lives of colleagues.

The Fund has awarded almost 450 bursaries since it was established in 2000.  Recent grantees have gone on to work in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and DRC.

Who can apply?

Rory Peck Training Bursaries are international.

Bursaries are available to media workers who have been working as bona fide professional freelancers involved in newsgathering or current affairs for a minimum of 18 months.

Priority is given to those:

• With an immediate or urgent need
• With confirmed assignments in hostile regions
• Whose work habitually takes them into hostile environments
