With unprecedented access, Rodrigo’s film uncovers the reality of daily life in Gaza under a Hamas government, tracking one of its new police units who, just weeks earlier, had been frontline fighters.
His film captures scenes of violent chaos as the police try to cope with their new role.
The judges thought Rodrigo Vazquez showed bravery and "incredible tenacity". One said: "It was completely compelling viewing from beginning to end. The camera merged with the crowds and police and took you right under the skin of what’s happening in Gaza."
Biography
Rodrigo Vazquez was born in Argentina in 1969. He studied film direction and production in Buenos Aires before moving to the UK in 1995. As a freelance producer / director / cameraman he has filmed in war zones from Central America to the Middle East.
Rodrigo's work has been nominated for Royal Television Society Awards and he won the Rory Peck Award for Features in 2003. His films for cinema include the 90-minute documentary film “Condor: Axis of Evil” which premiered at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated by dozens of film festivals around the world.
In 2005 Rodrigo founded Bethnal Films to produce independent feature films and documentaries.
