Shifting Sands took place at the Poly in Falmouth, January 2012
Exhibition: Shifting Sands by Guy Martin
During the Spring of 2011, freelance documentary photographer Guy Martin travelled to Egypt and Libya to record the unfolding Arab Spring. On Wednesday 20 April, Guy's work in the region was cut short. Whilst covering violent urban warfare in the besieged Western city of Misurata, Guy was severely injured in a rocket attack by Gaddafi loyalists.
Presented by University College Falmouth's School of Media and Performance in January 2012, Shifting Sands was the first exhibition of Guy's work since the attack, and marked a lengthy and continuing period of recovery for the young photographer. It showed the work he shot in Egypt and Libya in 2011.
The main exhibition framed a series of events, including a private view, talks and screenings. Each event highlighted the heavy price that can be paid by frontline photojournalists in the cause of documenting a country and its people's struggle for freedom.
Proceeds from the week’s events, including a raffle for signed copies of Guy’s work, were donated to the Rory Peck Trust.
